Official Regulations of the Eighth World Mahjong Championship

 

I. Time & Venue:
The Eighth World Mahjong Championship will be held at Empark Grand Hotel Kunming, 

Yunnan Province, China from October 18 to 22, 2026 (Beijing Time).

For detailed timetables, please refer to the official event schedule.

II. Competition Rules:
All matches shall be conducted in strict accordance with the international Mahjong Competition Rules (MCR) issued by the World Mahjong Organization (WMO).
All referees shall hold valid referee credentials issued by the the World Mahjong Organization (WMO) and verified by the the World Mahjong Organization (WMO) Competition Center.

III. Code of Participation:
All participants shall abide by the international Mahjong Competition Rules (MCR) issued by the WMO. Participants shall prioritize morality, observe public ethics, respect fellow competitors, obey referees, uphold the essence and spirit of mahjong, improve mental agility and physical fitness, and maintain harmonious and orderly

competition.

IV. Competition Format:
Individual, Four-Person Team and National Group Events will be held concurrently. 

The tournament consists of 10 rounds in total, with each round lasting 120 minutes.
A round-robin format will be adopted. When arranging match schedules, competitors from the same country or region shall be separated as much as possible. Final rankings for Individual, Four-Person Team and National Group Events are determined based on total scores across all 10 rounds.

V. Ranking Criteria:
Rankings are sorted by total standard match points (4, 2, 1, 0). In case of equal total standard points, the competitor with higher total game points shall be ranked higher. If game points remain tied, the competitor with the highest single-round score takes precedence.
             

Individual Event: Top 16 ranked players will be awarded official rankings
Four-Person Team Event: Top 8 teams ranked by combined total scores of four team members

National Group Event: Top 6 countries ranked by aggregate scores of each nation`s top four players

VI. Awards & Certificates:
1. Awards for Top 16 Players in the Individual
2. Overall Ranking Awards for Top 8 Teams in the Four-Person Team
3. Overall Ranking Awards for Top 6 Countries in the National Group
4. Overall Ranking Highest Single-Round Score
5. Award Highest Single-Hand Score
6. Award Fair Play
7. Award All participants who complete all competition rounds in compliance with official rules will receive an  

  individual ranking certificate and commemorative badge.

VII. Competition Equipment:

Automatic mahjong tables and official mahjong tiles designated by the WMO Competition Center and the China Mahjong Open Organizing Committee shall be used in accordance with the official MCR Rules.

VIII. Mahjong Ranking Certification:

This Championship implements the Mahjong Ranking Certification System formulated by the WMO. Players who meet the relevant evaluation standards may apply to receive an official corresponding mahjong ranking certificate.

IX. Registration Requirements:
The Competition Committee and Liaison, Reception & Tourism Committee of the Organizing Committee shall be fully responsible for all registration matters.
The Organizing Committee reserves the right to accept or reject registration applications and issue special invitations. Participant quotas are allocated based on the principles of fairness, impartiality and sound development of competitive intellectual mahjong. If any country or region fails to fill its allocated quota by the deadline, vacant spots will be filled by applicants from other countries and regions on a first-come, first-served basis. All participants must complete registration procedures in accordance with the MCR and requirements set by the Organizing Committee.
Each country shall submit the names, genders, photos and team names of all its participants to the Organizing Committee of the Eighth World Mahjong Championship no later than September 20, 2026.
Registration is only confirmed upon receipt of written registration emails and full payment of entry fees, until all quotas are filled before the registration deadline.

X. Participation Fees:
Entry Fee Standard: CNY 1,800/USD 268/EUR 238 per person (excluding postal delivery fees).

The fee covers the official event handbook, score sheets, printed copy of the Mahjong Competition Rules, souvenir packages, three daily meals during the competition, event refreshment breaks, Welcome Dinner and Awards Banquet, four nights of shared twin-room accommodation, and shuttle transport arranged by the Organizing Committee.

The twin-room rate is included in the base fee. Participants requiring a private single room shall pay an extra surcharge of CNY 800/USD 120/EUR 100 per person. Any additional personalized arrangements or special demands shall be borne by participants at their own cost.

Registration will only be processed after full entry fees are transferred to the designated official bank accounts (Please find the Entry Fee Guidelines for full details).

Non-participating guests are not entitled to participant benefits and shall cover all expenses independently.

XI. Interpretation of Regulations:
The Organizing Committee of the Eighth World Mahjong Championship reserves the exclusive right to interpret these official regulations. Any matters not covered herein will be announced separately via official notice.
