The 8th World Mahjong Championship will be held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China - a city known for its pleasant spring-like weather all year round, from 18 to 22 October 2026.
Hosted by the World Mahjong Organization (WMO), the World Mahjong Championship is the world`s most authoritative and high-level competitive intellectual mahjong tournament. Founded in Beijing in 2005 with initiators from eight countries, the WMO now boasts members spanning more than 40 countries and regions. The Organization has consistently strove to promote the Olympic Spirit, advocate a healthy, scientific and friendly mahjong culture, and advance the sound development of competitive intellectual mahjong.
Since releasing the international Mahjong Competition Rules (MCR) in 2006, the WMO has staged seven World Mahjong Championships:
1st Championship (2007): Emei Mountain, Chengdu, China.
2nd Championship (2010): Utrecht, the Netherlands
3rd Championship (2012): Qianjiang District, Chongqing, China
4th Championship (2015): Jeju Island, South Korea
5th Championship (2017): Xi`an, China
6th Championship (2019): Lyon, France
7th Championship (2024): Toronto, Canada
Today, the World Mahjong Championship stands as a premier flagship competition and vital communication platform for global enthusiasts of competitive mahjong played under MCR.
A series of supporting events will run alongside the main competition, including mahjong cultural forums, seminars on competition rules, referee training and professional assessments. The Organizing Committee aims to deliver a high-standard international MCR mahjong gala integrating intellectual competition, cultural exchange, tourism and leisure, and drive the standardized development of competitive mahjong through diverse initiatives.
The 8th World Mahjong Championship shall be conducted strictly in accordance with the WMO`s international Mahjong Competition Rules (MCR). Individual, Team and National Team competitions will be held simultaneously, with rankings determined by total scores over 10 rounds of matches.
1. Individual Competition: Top 16 places
2. Team Competition (voluntarily formed teams of four players registered in advance): Top 8 places
3. National Team Competition: Top 6 nations based on the aggregate scores of each country`s top four participants.
All competitors who complete all 10 rounds in compliance with the rules will receive a result certificate and badge. Those meeting the criteria under the Mahjong Ranking Certification System may apply for the corresponding official mahjong ranking certificate.
This Championship will serve not only as an elite arena for the world`s top mahjong players, but also a grand occasion for cultural exchange, rule popularization, professional training and in-depth integration of culture, tourism and sports.
Kunming, capital city of Yunnan Province, is a renowned historical and cultural city, a regional hub facing South and Southeast Asia, and an international comprehensive transportation junction. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,890 meters above sea level, Kunming enjoys comfortably cool weather in mid-October, with average temperatures ranging from 13.6C to 19.9C. It is a city that captivates visitors to return and come back again.
The official designated host hotel is Kunming Empark Grand Hotel (Five-star Hotel), located at No.1 Yingbin Road, Guandu District, Kunming. It is roughly 35 kilometers from Kunming Changshui International Airport and 15 kilometers from Kunming Railway Station with convenient transport links. The Organizing Committee of the 8th World Mahjong Championship offers preferential accommodation arrangements and transfer services for all participants and guests (Please refer to the Competition Regulations for full details).
All WMO member organizations and mahjong friends from all countries and regions are warmly invited to register in accordance with the Competition Regulations and join this prestigious international mahjong event.
